Show FARManJHOME&i UTAH STATU EXTENSION 8ERVIC ScttlCULTl'RB." BOMB ECONOMIC By Louis A. Jensen County Agricultural Agent Farmers intending to grow corn silage this year should be purchasing their seed soon. That brings up the question as to which variety is best. Each year a number of different varieties are tested to determine which yielded the best in each locality. local-ity. The following general information in-formation is based on state-wide testing: Three early maturing- varieties varie-ties have done well, they are Minhybrid 301, Kingscross 6, and Utahybrid 544. Utahybrid 544 matures about a week later then Minhybrid 301. Five late maturing varieties have been tested: Portwalco 100, Ohio C 38, Utahybrid 680, Minnesota Min-nesota 13, and US 52. In the test at Mt. Emmons last year, Minhybrid 301, Utahybrid 540 and Kingscross 6 yielded the highest. In the test at Arcadia, Portwalco 100, Utahybrid 680. and Minhybrid 301 yielded the; highest. The difference in yields was not great however. Those growing corn for silage in high elevations of the county should plant one of the three early maturing varieties listed above. The later maturing varieties varie-ties will do well in the lower elevations. Now is the time to spray for weevil control. Use 1V4 to 2 lbs. per acre of actual Chlor-dane. Chlor-dane. If this is done soon it will destroy the adult weevil before they have laid their eggs. Fertilizer tests and demonstrations demonstra-tions will be conducted throughout through-out . the county. One test has been established on the farm of Hyrum Jensen near Roosevelt to compare the result of spring vs fall application of phosphate to alfalfa. Another test will be established (probably in Arcadia) Arca-dia) to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilizer on grain. Six farmers in the county are cooperating co-operating in the T.V.A. fertilizer demonstration program. Results of these tests will be made available avail-able periodically. Wenzil Luke, of Roosevelt, has been employed as county weed supervisor. He will work closely with the county weed committee and the district inspector in-spector in an effort to help put over an effective weed control program in the county. Announcement An-nouncement of the details of the 1951 weed program will be made in the near future. |
