Show News From St. Helen's Catholic Church i : By ; Father Pellegrino The children of St. Helen's Parish had their annual Christmas party on Monday afternoon, Dec. j 17. Games and refreshments helped the children to get into the spirit of the season. The CYO and Sodality enjoyed their party on last Friday at the Sisters convent. "The Sun Came Up" was enjoyed by all, together with refreshments and games. On Tuesday evening the Sodality Girls went out to the shutins and to the Hospital for Christmas Carols. Religious songs were sung as a tribute to Christ on His Birthday. The Altar Boy's who will serve the Midnight Mass had their prac- ties this Thursday afternoon at the Church. Lovely Red Cassocks have been prepared to go with season's colors. The traditional White surplices, and ties and bows will also be worn by the servers. The Christmas play will be held this coming Sunday afternoon at 3:00 at the Roosevelt Junior High. All are invited to attend. The kindergarten and the older children will all take part in the entertainment. iGuests at the Rectory last week were the Notre Dame High School basketball players and their coach, Jack Kobe. The boys won their games against Taoiona and Duchesne, Du-chesne, but lost to Atlamont. Among the players were the following: fol-lowing: Victor Lopez, Robert Frat-to, Frat-to, Terry DeVietti, Herman Nev-ener, Nev-ener, Robert McKinnon, Phillip Dalpiaz, Paul Dupin, John Kokal, Kent Sasaki, Lynn Thomas and Russ Bonacci. This week the December Ember Day's are here. The word "Ember" means "Cycle" and it comes from the AnglojSaxon word for season. These days were instituted to consecrate con-secrate each season of the year j to God to thank Him for the benefits bene-fits received. On these days only one full meal is permitted, and meat is allowed only at that meal. On Friday, total abstinence from meat is required. Arriving home for the Christmas Holidays this Friday will be Phillip LaCourse and Richard La-Course, La-Course, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon I H. LaCourse of Fort Duchesne. Du-chesne. Phillip is at the Franciscan Francis-can Seminary at Santa Barbara, studying for the Catholic Priesthood, Priest-hood, and Richard is at the Novitiate at San Luis Rey1, prepar- ing to enter the Major Seminary. On Dec. 21, the Feast of Saint Thomas, the Apostle, will be celebrated cele-brated at Mass and in the Office of the Church. St. Thomas is often referred to as the "Doubling Apostle." He suffered Martyrdom for Christ in India in the First Century A. D. Saint ' Francis Xavier Cabrini will be commorated on Dec. 22. She is the first American citizen to be cannonized a Saint in the Church. She founded the order of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. They work with the Italian immigrants who come to this country. Theodore Maynard has written an excellent biography of the Saint entitled "Too Small A World." St. Francis visited Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and many other American cities where she founded hospitals, orphan homes and schools. While in Salt Lake City she stayed overnight over-night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ferrero. The day before Chirstams is a day of fast and abstinence. No one is allowed to eat meat on that day in preparation for the Birthday of Jesus Christ. Only one full meal is allowed. The week of 'December 23rd is Communion Week for St. Helen's CYO. In the state-wide Communion Commun-ion Crusade, the youth of the Diocese are praying for vocations and for Purity. Sincerity and a sense of responsibility" in youth. All CYO members are urged to attend Mass and to receive Holy Communion each morning. |
