Show Senate Passes Watkins Bill Authorizing Sale Of Indian Lands The U. S. Senate, on April 11, approved a bill authored by Senator Sen-ator Arthur V. VVatkins which will permit the sale of Ute Indian In-dian tribal lands within the townsite limits of Duchesne, Randlett and My ton. The measure meas-ure now goes to the House of Representatives for action. Senator Watkins' bill provides specifically that the Uintah-Ouray Tribal Business Committee of the -Ute Iclian Tribe of t-Uintah t-Uintah and Ouray reservation, in behalf of the tribe, and with the approval of the Secretary of the Interior, may sell any purchaser pur-chaser the following described tracts of land: The North half of the Northwest North-west quarter of Section 29; Lot 1 and the Northeast quarter of the Northwest quarter, and the Northeast quarter of Section 30; the Southwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of Lot 4 of Section 19, of Township 3 South, Range 1 West of the U.S.M. In the case of Myton, the bill introduced by Senator Watkins and passed last Friday by the Senate, if approved by the House, will open the way for Myton to acquire an airport site. In the same light Duchesne and Randlett Rand-lett may acquire Indian lands within their respective town-sites town-sites for civic development. The original bill, governing the Indian land in question pro- vided that residents could purchase pur-chase certain portions of the property at $1.25 per acre within with-in a specified time. All lands not purchased were returned to the Interior Department for administration. admin-istration. The location selected is included includ-ed in the lands which will be offered of-fered for sale if the Watkins bill passes the House. |
