Show Educational Methods Demonstrated To Parents Who Attend RHS Classes The parents of Roosevelt high school students were given an all day course in modern education last Friday when they substituted substi-tuted in the classrooms at RHS for the regularly enrolled students. stu-dents. Designated by Principal Law-rell Law-rell Jensen as Parents Day, the usual schedule of class visits and a viewing of student exhibits by the parents was by-passed in favor fav-or of 6V hours of actual schooling. school-ing. - A normal school day was duplicated dup-licated as nearly as possible with the parents responding to the bells calling" for class changes in the usual manner. To parents from rural areas transportation was furnished by school bus. Classes started promptly at 9 a. m. with the parents responding respond-ing to roll call as proxies for the students. In each instance where a pupil was not represented repre-sented by one of his or her parents, par-ents, the student was marked with an absence. With textbooks before them, the parents participated in frank discussions relative to the books in use and why they were being be-ing used. Class methods, the system of grading, student attitude atti-tude and attendance came in for their share of review. Generally the parents completed com-pleted their day of school with the idea that they must assume a certain share of the rcsponsi- bility for the individual students, leaving the group direction up to the teachers. The importance of regular attendance at-tendance on the part of students was emphasized. It was pointed out that irregular attendance made it difficult for the student missing class to become adjusted to class routine. Classes were cut short to allow al-low for an assembly which is a regular part' of school activity. And before the final bell, most of the parents were afforded an opportunity of conferring regarding regard-ing the status of their youngsters. At noon, 178 parents lined up and filed into the dining room to be served with the same food provided the students under the school lunch program. In commenting on the experiment, experi-ment, Principal Jensen ruled it highly successful; one which should give the parents the needed need-ed first hand information on how ' classes function," and the problems faced by both student and teacher. Mr. Jensen indicated that the type of Parents' Day inaugurated last week at Roosevelt high would be continued as an annual event. |
