Show Proclamation Urges Employment Of Handicapped Mayor Harrison today issued a Proclamation declaring October 5-1 1, 1947 as National Employ the Physically Handicapped week. This declaration was made pursuant to similar proclamations proclama-tions by President Truman and Governor Maw in accordance with Public Law 176, 79th Congress. Con-gress. In issuing the Proclamation for the third annual observance of NEPH Week, Mayor Harrison urged that "all administrators in business, public and private agencies ag-encies within the jurisdiction of my office and the general citizenry cit-izenry thereof, to aid in disseminating dissem-inating information and observing observ-ing this special program in acquainting ac-quainting all persons with the values, needs and desirability of -employing handicapped individuals, individ-uals, to the end that they may become dependable, self-supporting and useful citizens." Clarence D. Lambert, Manager of the Employment Office at Vernal, stated that his agency is "spearheading" a campaign, in cooperation with the Veterans Employment Service, Disabled American Veterans, Utah Office for Vocational Rehabilitation and other state and local agencies, to promote the program. Mr. Lambert Lam-bert pointed out that it actually pays to hire the physically handicapped. han-dicapped. Surveys of employers of physically handicapped individuals indi-viduals show that 51 per cent of the handicapped workers had better safety records, 48 per cent of the handicapped workers had better than average attendance atten-dance records, and 58 per cent of such workers stay at their jobs longer than non-handicapped workers. Employers interested in hiring handicapped workers are requested re-quested to contact the local employment em-ployment office where these workers are registered or where information is available regarding regard-ing this type of work. Likewise, physically handicapped persona who are interested in obtaining work or desire information regarding re-garding vocational rehabilitation are requested to see the employment employ-ment office representative. Churches, civic organizations, labor organizations, farm groups and other organizations are all urged to cooperate in promoting this program not only for the week October 5-11, but the entire en-tire year. |
