Show Christmas in Netv Mexico Marked by Indian Drama Christmas in New Mexico is a subtle mixture of the past and present, pres-ent, with Indian ceremonials and Spanish-American folk customs existing ex-isting alongside typically Christian celebrations. Most popular of Christmas Christ-mas ceremonials among New Mexico's Mex-ico's Pueblo Indians is "Los Mata-chines," Mata-chines," a dance drama which has its roots in the ancient Aztec civilization civili-zation of Mexico. In many pueblos, especially those in the Rio Grande and Jemez valleys, ceremonial dances are performed after midnight mid-night mass, on Christmas eve, on . Christmas day, and for the ensuing three days. The fortnight before and after Christmas renews the annual New Mexico presentations of age-old age-old miracle plays. |
