He iJim Jr.) calls when he can and let's us 1mm what is happening in his life," said Jim L M.ihon. Sr. "Like the other day he notified us in.ii he was in LI Paso, Texas golfing in a tournament. tour-nament. He had been invited to play by Terry I'.i.iJshaw, quarterback of the Pittsburg Steelers," lie added. I'm happy for Jim,'.' said Jim's mom, Roberta. ' I ,er thing has happened so fast that it is hard to keep up with it all." In the latter days of April, Jim was drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears of the NFL. Mi . McMahon said it was no surprise to him that his son would someday be an NFL quarterback. "1 knew it as well as 1 know I have to get up cverulay and go to work. I knew Jimmy had what n takes from the very beginning." An exciting time is to sit around the kitchen tain,' ta-in,' w ith the McMahon family and hear the stories coming out of Chicago. One thing for sure, Jim will wear No. 9 this fall. i first coach Mike Ditka had assigned him No. 10. Hut he later made it very clear that McMahon was going to wear No, 9, the number now worn hv Chicago's place kicker, Joe Roveto. It should be pointed out that the last time the Hears won a team championship is when the quarterback quar-terback (Bill Wade) wore No. 9. Coach Ditka made the comment to the Chicago press that Jim will be able to come in and get a chance to compete head on with the Bear's pre-h-iiI quarterback. Vince Evans. When it's over,":'? Ditka says the best man will start. Mr. McMahon said that Ditka clarified himself later on by saying that Jim had to realize the Hears already had a quarterback and that Jim would have to beat out others "cut and dried." "In an article I read recently, Ditka said Jim wasn't going to sit idly on the bench waiting for L -'.vans to fail." said Mr. McMahon. He also said that Ditka had been quoted as saying that McMahon would play in the first exhibition games tor the Hears. The family has an air of respect to what is happening hap-pening with Jim in Chicago. But it isn't the awe that most would expect. Jim's two brothers, Mike and Dan. admire what Jim has done and ask about him frequently, but life still goes on for both of them, especially with Mike and his one- ear old son. w hen newspaper clippings come from Chicago they are devoured in minutes but an hour laier the family gets in the car to go see Mike play in a softball came or Stacey (Jim's sister) play volleball. The family was pretty excited when Jim was married. But now with Lynda (another sister) graduating from Roy High in a couple of weeks, ccr one's attention will turn to that event. There are "no favorites" with this family, ever-one. ever-one. whether you are an NFL quarterback or a hairdresser in Roy like Robin (still another sister), ou are very important in your own way. McMahon is excited about the chance to suit up again and let actions speak for themselves. Why not. "1 hat's just the way he has always done it. A sc en-figure income over a three or four year period is new to him. That's why he has left it up to his agent. Jerry Argovitz. Argovitz has a stable full of talented, recognizable clients and he plans to help Jimmy to the fullest. The fans of Chicago appear to enjoy the quarterback quar-terback battle between Jim and Vince Evans, who ;us ct to sign w ith the Bears. We. here at home, will also enjoy it just as much. |
