| Show weed control supervisor makes report reviews project success urges early application for assistance in 1940 in an annual report of the weed eradication project in sevier county christy anderson supervisor stresses cultivation as the dorkof work of most permanent value most of the land that has been under a two year cultivation program can now be turned back to the owners he states A recheck re check will be made in the spring when it Is is hoped that remaining pieces will vill be found free from weeds repeated cultivation has served the double purpose of killing the weeds and improving the soil mr anderson maintains the cultivation method of weed eradication is especially effective on large areas of land the report indicates as it is corr comparatively cheap and is usually effective in two years for quick kills hills on small areas that are arc badly infested and awkwardly located as along fence lines ditch banks and bits of waste lands use of chem chemicals I 1 has been found most practical pr aati carbon sod sodium aum ium chlorate and atla atlaide cide have an all been found effective and necessary in such places carbon is too costly to use on large areas and sodium chlorate and atla cide are inadvisable except for the waste areas mentioned because the they adversely affect productivity of the soil the report explains it is of interest to note that according to the county clerks records the county has advanced this year for chemicals and of this amount farmers have already paid back to the county the county has spent for equipment a and nd labor in this program according to marion bird clerk mr andersons report gives the f following lowing ol figures figur es acres of land have been cultivated by liand hand labor of which amount there were acres worked on the orest forest but once with special ef fort to eradicate larkspur the remaining acres private lands canals and city streets have been worked a number of times special attention has been paid to io destroying white top canadian thistle puncture vine and all burs acres have been cultivated by team and power the largest percentage of this acres was city streets canal banks and road ways the other acres were private farm lands owned by 50 farmers on which special attention v was as given canadian thistle white top and glory here there have been interesting te and positive results sixty five farmers took advantage of the chemical program for which 2132 gallons of carbon and pounds of sod ium aum chlorate and atla cide were used the farmers are arc particularly enthusiastic about the carbon reviewing the work mr an derson states in his report that the weed eradication program lias has been in effect in sevier count county since 1936 and gives credit t to 0 the county commissioners the district agricultural inspector county agent and officials for assistance demand for the service has increased each year and it is expected it will far exceed what the county can do in 1940 he said in urging early application by farmers interested concluding his report he makes the following statements every year there is a grout great deal of money spent on roads public buildings and other community and county improvements these are all essential and should be encouraged but this is a farming center the welfare of all citizens in sevier county ihde is dependent on the farmers As the farms improve and the farmers succeed the county itself profits one of the most deadly enemies I 1 that has confronted the farmer is the noxious weeds and as the th farmer destroys this enemy the wealth of the county increases but if such weeds become rampant and force the farmer to aban don his land then the whole county suffers and your beautiful highways public parks and buildings are valueless lu elss the weed project has had or on lya a beginning its big future is yet ahead of it and is dependent on the wide awake and intelligent farmer f armer and on the clear vision of the other citizens with their support and interest this program 1 can do much for sevier county |
