| Show WHITE HOUSE conference ON CHILDREN TO REPORT intensified efforts in child welfare work in sevier county and surrounding communities during the past few years call forth a greater appreciation of the na 1 dional child welfare program the latest point of interest in this pro gram grain is the announcement of a meeting to be held at the nations capital next january at which committees will report to the president the findings of the fourth white house conference on children in a democracy which was held last april it is expected that the activities of the conference will result in practical suggestions looking toward giving greater security to children and a larger measure of opportunity to youth to strengthen the foundation of our national life it was the judgment of the planning committee of the conference that at the present time the needs of childhood require particular attention and that the conditions in europe now absorbing so much attention should not di vert the national mind from the need of strengthening our democracy from within the care for and the essential development of the nations children to this cm the president approved a recommendation men dation of the planning committee of the conference to call the entire conference into session at washington january 18 to 20 1940 the first white whit e house conference was called in 1909 by theo theodora dor roosevelt at the suggestion of james E west chief executive scout leader who believed that the nation ought to do something to inspire hope in the lives of Us its dependent children the establishment lish ment of the childrens bureau U S labor department grew directly form that conference L lillian il D wald president of the board of directors of henry street settlement in new york city was the first to propose the bureau both she and mr west attended the white house conference last april the second conference was called by president wilson in 1919 and the third by president hoover I 1 in 1930 more than 1000 national leaders attended the conference |
