Show sugar act beet wage scale set national rates below those of 1938 based on hearings held the sugar division of the department part ment of agriculture has announced a rate to be paid laborers in the production cultivation or harvesting hal vesting of the 1939 sugar beet crop by producers in the sugar beet area who apply for payments under the sugar act the sugar act requires among other conditions of payments to growers that all persons employed on a farm in the production cultivation or harvesting of sugar beets be paid in full by growers for all such work at rates not less jess than those determined by the secretary of agriculture to be fair and r reasonable F for the purposes of this th s determination termination Ic the sugar beet producing producing area was divided I 1 into nine districts within each of which one scale of minimum wages applies I 1 for the united states as a whole the general level of the minimum wage rates announced is about 4 percent below that of 19 1938 8 practically the same as that of the minimum rates determined for 1937 after enactment of the sugar act and approximately 5 per cent above the general level of sugar beet wages prevailing prior to passage of this legislation this determination of minimum wages was made after investigations and following a series of public hearings held between january 9 and january 30 in detroit michigan lic higan minneapolis minnesota billings montana seattle washington salt lake city utah denver colorado and scottsbluff Scotts bluff nebraska in utah idaho and oregon which is dietric eight blocking and thinning has been placed at 8 per acre the first hoeing 52 2 per acre and the second and all ali following goeings 1 per acre for topping and loading the following rate has been determined six tons per acre or below 32 12 tons per acre 15 tons per acre and 18 tons per acre when topping and loading are performed by different persons 30 percent of the foregoing rates shau shall be paid for loading |
