Show HOOS KOOSHAREM HAREAK in 1874 peter of salina was called by president jos joa A young of sevier stake to take charge of the settlement of grass valley which had been to some extent explored by the surveying party of 1873 president young sir mr frands P peterson and john christensen spent several days exploring the section and made surveys to see how high upon the bench land the water could be brought from otter creek it was decided to establish a town where kooshak ern em is now located three or four log cabins were built in the fall of 1874 which served as homes for the families that came ame r to the locality during the winter these first settlers were the three men before mentioned who accompanied president young karen nielson and one other man and their families A little farming was done in 1875 and 1876 with water from koosharem Koo sharem creek in the fall of 1876 and the spring of 1877 a canal was built to carry water from otter cheek which was extended in the spring of 1878 to a place 12 1 miles south of town peter was the presiding elder of grass valley until 1877 when a ward was 1 with joseph wright as bishop peter and petel anderson counselors leonard delange was made ward clerk in 1878 the ward was known as the grass valley ward in 1878 auxiliary organizations of the ward were effected in 1878 eight families moved in from ephraim in october of that year peter called a meeting to discuss the building of a new canal to bring water higher up on the bench peter frands P peterson jens C A anderson n hans and john G jorgensen from koosharem Koo sharem joseph W wright and edward A bagley of greenwich were appointed a committee to take charge of the work N M peterson was selected to make the survey by june 1879 the water was turned in and carried as far south as Koo share utown but no land was irrigated from the canal until many cottiers of grass valley lest nearly all they had durin during g what is known by the old settlers as the hard winter dr iter 1879 18 1880 the snowfall was heavy and where feed had previously been plentiful many cattle perished the winter followed an exception ally dry season which added to the loss of feed the following fol lovin years however conditions condition improved I 1 m p r ov greatly until the I 1 locality 0 L ty d developed e into an enterprising stock raising and farming section |
