Show THOUSANDS ATT FIB FORMAL OPENING OF THE NEW mm clean fun and entertainment characterize days festivities DERN DEDICATES one of the most enthusiastic and most largely attended affairs staged in in richfield for many months was the formal opening and dedication of the new armory last saturday it is estimated that 2000 people were fed deer and elk meat barbecued sandwiches in the atter afternoon noon and fully as many attended the boxing match in the evening the big drill room was packed to its full capacity for the military ball which climaxed the day of festivities everybody was wag j happy and the entire affair was wag pronounced a decided success with many a fine tribute paid to the boys of battery E for the manner in in which the program was carried out and the splendid entertainment offered one feature of the days events and particularly noticeable during the dance was the absence of and into intoxication which sometimes characterizes affairs of this land kind governor and mrs dern dem commented very favorably upon this W point t captain J R barker was highly i gratified for the manner in which the members of the battery the visiting officers and the general public cooperated in lending proper dignity to this occasion casion governor and mrs george H dern dem arrived in good time for the program which was scheduled to start at 4 p in the governor was heartily greeted by the large audience who showed their respect and appreciation for his coming by standing and giving him prolonged applause when he arose to give the dedicatory address governor dern in the prelude to his talk praised Rich fields climate stating that it is a generally acknowledged fact that it is the very best in utah and that is saying a good deal he added he also complimented the utah national guard calling it his army inasmuch as he is the official head of that organization by virtue of his office he added that the richfield unit ranks as one of the best in the state and spoke highly of the value of the discipline and general mental moral and physical t training mining that the battery boys receive they stand ready for any state emergency and are an integral part of the standing army of the united states this army under the present besent efficient plan consists of only ly regular soldiers and mo more re than J members of the national guard in the various states this system not only saves the government much money in the support of an army but it brings a great deal of extra money to the states in that the federal government pays 4 ag against a dinst the states 1 for the pay 0 of f the national guard members governor dem stated that the purpose of the state in erecting such fine armory buildings was not only y to adequately house the national tio al guard units but to furnish a municipal auditorium for the use of citizens he cordially invited the public to make use of the splendid building here for it belongs to them as well as to the battery major majo H E beal who acted as master of ceremonies gave high praise to adjutant general W G williams when he introduced him as the next speaker calling hi him the friend of the battery boys general williams endorsed the governors invitation to the public to make use of this armory as a 11 civic recreational center but stated that it could not be used for private gain the musical numbers between addresses were well rendered and and well received the richfield Eich field band added greatly to the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the occasion the boxing card staged in the drill room at p m was as CO conceded to be the best ever pulled off here most of the bouts were draws and there was not a single round but what was full of thrills and excitement A number of san pete pet e county boys made splendid showings one of them from gunnison scoring the only knockout of the evening when lie he felled dick ogden the snappy little richfield boxer the headline event between roe P pace ace of torrey and red balle of glenwood was the toughest bout ever seen here it is generally admitted both men took punishment which it would seem impossible for a human to stand but both remained in the ring until the final bell tile the bout was called a draw but the general opinion of the au audience bence w was a s that pace face had bad a little the best 0 of f the match balle failing to put up his lu s usual defense and remaining wide open for some of paces vicious left lefthand hand punches |
