Show CITY COUNCIL SE no 6 LETTER TO SENAT AN 0 congressman urge projects for employment in forest district the regular meeting of the mayor and city council thursday evening aside from routine matters and the appointment of A M sellars as city mechanic was devoted to a discussion of possible federal appropriations for projects that would furnish work for the unemployed As a result of the discussion a letter was formulated and sent to senator reed smoot senator wm win H king and congressman don B colton urging them to vote for public c improvements that would furnish employment the main part dart of the letter follows according to press articles unusually heavy cuts are being ard made by congress in appropriations which have heretofore greatly ben emitted communities in this part of the state of utah these appropriations lations for the construction and maintenance of roads and trails telephone lines and recreational improvements within what is known as the Fish fishlike fishlake lake forest reserve have provided work for a large number of citizens most in in need of employment last spring and summer on road and other projects construction and maintenance crews were changed every two weeks in order to make as wide distribution of employment as possible in view of the fact that there lias has been no material improvement pro with reference to relieving the unemployment situation a large number of our citizens are in need of work and if work on local meritorious meri road projects telephone lines and other improvements could be initiated th this is spring many needy families would be prevented from asking for dole while we heartily approve of the large appropriations made for land banks railroads etc we feel that it will require considerable time before local people will derive any direct benefit from such appropriations on the other hand appropriations for roads and trails will greatly benefit deserving laborers now because work can be initiated immediately people are in need of work to retain their self respect and not in need of ability to borrow money and become more deeply involved no form of federal expenditures has done so much as road expenditures to relieve unemployment there are quite a number of meritorious meri road projects in this section of the state on which work has partly been completed or on which work should be anit initiated bated these projects if the necessary appropriations are made would provide work for a large number of our people and greatly relieve the unemployment situation amos wood and co who are auditing the city accounts expect to have the work completed friday |
