Show Val Verda Residents Remove Names From Petition, Stop Vote FARMINGTON Val Verda Ver-da residents who have been worried about the possibility of an election on incorporation can relax now. The election has been cancelled. THE ELECTION had originally ori-ginally been called for by a petition signed by 577 registered reg-istered voters from the Val Verda area. County officials then planned the election for the beginning of next May. At a public hearing on the issue held Nov. 30th, however, howev-er, several residents asked the county if the election could be cancelled. County Attorney Rod Page said that the only way to stop the election would be for more than 50 percent of the original petition signers to officially withdraw their names in writing. THE DEADLINE for withdrawing with-drawing names was set for last Thursday and according to County Clerk Mike Allphin, 399 withdrawal requests had been received by the deadline. About 80 of the names were declared invalid, but that still left 319 qualified withdrawal requests. The election was stopped by only 29 names. Mr. Allphin said that both the original petition and the withdrawal requests were on file in the clerk's office and . available for public inspection. "IT APPEARS that the proposal to incorporate is now a dead issue," said Commission Commis-sion Chairman Glen Saunders. The commission unanimously declared the original petition invalid and cancelled the planned plan-ned election. Meanwhile, Val Verda residents resi-dents now face the decision as to whether or not to annex into either North Salt Lake or Bountiful. Separate home rule, however, seems to be even further out of reach than it ever was. mf |
