Show VMdmiss Blast East 277 I By GARY R. BLODGETT ' nipper News Editor viEWMONT -- Viewmont Vik- i ncs "pul it all together" Friday night to easily trim Fast High's Leopards 27-7 in one of the craiest high school grid games seen locally in long time. THERE WERE not only some spectacular plays on both sides --: --: specially of the long-pass ariety : -but there was a recovered fumble J for a touchdown; not one but two ' quick kicks to get East out of the hole, ind then to top things off x there was a fight that resulted in a 60-ard penalty on one play. v That's right, 60 yards. Craziest thing this w riter has seen in more than a quarter of a century of govs' gov-s' ering sports. AETER breaking up the brawl - ot which there was just u lot of rushing and shoving with no one gettmu hurt - game officials tacked two personal fouls against each team. The incident occurred near midfield and (he referee picked up the ball and marched 30 yards toward to-ward the Mast goal line. Viewmont fans went wild as he stepped off the 30 yard penalty. The ret' then set (he ball dow n on about the 20, picked it up again and marched off 30 yards against Viewmont View-mont -- right back to the point of the infraction near midfield. T he penalties neither benefited nor hampered cither team - it w as just a matter of doing what had to be done. PLAYERS, benches and coaches were warned, however, that any more outbreaks of temper could result in players being ejected and the penalty could be damaging to the offending team. I'.asl fumbled the opening kick-off kick-off inside the 10 and Viewmont had an excellent opportunity to score but couldn't push the ball across the goal line, liven a second attempt failed before the Vikings were finally able to hit paydirt on a one-yard plunge by Hill Bagley with only 22 seconds left in the opening period. THE SCORING play was set up by a nifty bit of scrambling by quarterback quar-terback Bryan Hardy who crisscrossed criss-crossed the field a couple of times before unloading a strike to Bagley near the goal. Hast put on a show of its own midway in the second period when quarterback and defensive back Dave Marriott intercepted a pass on the East goal line and scampered scam-pered up the cast sideline to the Viewmont 42. Marriott passed to Troy Salie who made a spectacular catch on the VMS 22-yard line. THE LEOPARDS then scored their only touchdown when speedster Lou Sabala sprinted through the middle of the Viking line and scampered 22 yards for the TD. East scored the extra point and went ahead 7-6 at halftime. In the second half, it was all Viewmont -- both offensively and defensively. THE VIKINGS went ahead to slay after a comedy of miscues. First, Marriott intercepted another Viking pass to stop a threat and the Leopards caught Viewmonl's defense de-fense offguard with a quick effort to get out of trouble. Then East stopped Viewmont and the Vikings had to take advantage of a fumbled punt to regain possession. Hardy threw a strike to Bagley who lunged for the goal but didn't quite make it. Bagley, however, carried the ball for the score two plays later. Viewmont missed a two-point conversion, but still led 12-7. EAST threatened to take the lead again late in, the third period but a holding penalty on a would-be touchdown nullified the score. Breathing a sigh of relief, Viewmont View-mont got the momentum going for the rest of the game. Casey Klcinman made a beautiful beauti-ful catch of Hardy's long pass near midfield when he and the East defender de-fender went for the ball like they were going for a rebound in basketball. basket-ball. Kleinman had the best concentration con-centration and came down with the ball. However, the Vikings failed to score. KLEINMAN got revenge minutes mi-nutes later when Mike Hamilton recovered an East fumble on the East 15 to set up a scoring pass play from Hardy to the big end all alone in paydirt. A Hardy pass to Matt Bradshaw iced the game at 20-7 with eight minutes left in the game. Hamilton got into the act again late in the fourth quarter as he-broke he-broke through the East offensive line and stripped the ball from Marriott Mar-riott on about the 10 yard line. Bob Larsen, who plays linebacker on defense and tight end on offense, scooped up the fumbled ball and raced unmolested into the end zone to provide icing on the cake and a 27-7 victory. VIEWMONT advanced to 4-2 for the season while East dropped to one win against five losses. |
