Show THE STATE CAPITOL CAPI 0 L by JAMES B MOORE i do the people of the state of utah know enough about their state capitol to it is the most important building in the state our state headquarters the laws are enacted there the state supreme court sits aits in judgment there and there the chief executive of the state has his office regardless of a mans social standing or religious belief if he is a citizen of the state he is a share bhare holder in its capitol the people of utah may well be proud of their state capitol it is not only an important and useful building but a beautiful building a w wonderful ond erful building it is said to be one of the best it if not the finest state capitol in the united states As one approaches from the south if he can appreciate the beautiful at all he be is stirred although the building is but eight years old and although the trees and lawns are necessarily very young the surroundings are so well kept and in such order that a stranger would hardly believe the ground was first broken for the building on december 26 1912 yet this is true the corner stone was laid on april 4 1914 and the building was completed on july 3 1915 at a total cost of the capitol is feet long feet wide and feet high its general style is pure corinthian fifty two columns of tab gi granite anite grace its exterior the C columns 0 au mn s are 42 feet high the diameter of the dome is 64 feet A glance at the register on a table near the south entrance would lead one to conclude that a majority of the people who visit the capitol are arc not residents of the state of utah perhaps this is not true it is probable that more people from outside 0 of i the state take time to register entering the rotunda one is literally carried away by the beauty of the interior in the center stands a nine toot foot statue of massasoit Maesa Massa soft great sachem of the proctor and preserver ot of the pilgrims modeled and pres presented anted to his native state by the famous utah sculptor C E dallin suspended directly over it from the ceiling 0 the great dome is a chandelier which I 1 is eaid baid to weigh pounds the ninety five foot chain to which it is attached weighs pounds the distance from the floor of the rotunda to the ceiling of the dome is feet on the walls of the rotunda are 46 panels of georgia marble many of the panels are so arranged that a I 1 beautiful design is the result one is called the bluebird panel another the navajo panel and still another the butterfly panel those who spend much time in the building have elp ciphered hered many picture sin these great slabs of stone queen victorias face as she appeared in 1850 has been found on the floor a very natural Il likeness Reness of a man has been discovered on a pillar and many others are pointed out to visitors who take time to listen to the guides the capitol is a four story building with rooms five of the six assembly rooms are on the third floor these rooms are the house of representatives in the west end of the building the senate chamber in the north side the supreme court room in the east end the law library and the board room the 0 ther other assembly room is the governors reception room on the second floor just to the left of the main entrance this room is elaborately finished and furnished it is said that the whole color scheme and design for the furnishings of the room I 1 were worked out from the col color or an and d grain of the slab of birds eye marble marb I 1 I 1 e in the mantle piece the rug which is 22 feet by 43 feet and w weighs 1350 pounds was made in scotland the Curt curtains airis were made in florence italy the draperies were made in belgium the chandeliers were made of utah gold and silver and french cut glass the tapestry is of french production the r muriel painting was placed on the ceiling by paul chettle and the coyer cover on the massive table in the center of the room is made of gold and silver thread the total cost of the furnishings nish ings for the governors reception room was in this room the governor has received president wilson ex president taft the king of belgium and the prince of wales when the legislature is in session the state capitol is a veritable bee hive of industry even during slack times there is much going on there first floor state land commissioner state fair association war historian american
