Show r ricie de power hakea m A es know rW their air 0 new W rates ila 1 es for electric liht light service in our issue of last week we announced that the peti petition tion the telluride power co had addressed to the public utilities commission to be permitted to charge higher rates has been partly granted and an increase averaging 16 per cent has been granted to the company we are publishing below the new rates as far as they are interesting to the general public the population of 0 all the territory served by the telluride power co is very much dissatisfied with the decision by the utilities commission and unfavorable comment is being made quite universally ver sally while tile the first impression I 1 is that we were paying too much tor for electric hectric power and light under the old rates already and the increase means an additional burden to the users of electricity it will have to be seen what arguments induced the commission to grant the increase and we refrain from giving our ion before thoroughly perusing the reasons the commission gave for the grant the full decision is quite a lengthy instrument and came into our possession too late to be studied in time for this issue we will treat the subject editorially in our next issue and in the meantime we only state that the decision was not reached unanimously commissioners 1 warren and joshua greenwood are responsible tor for it and chairman A R haywood voiced a dissenting vote which is attached to the instrument as minority report and lit in which mr air haywood says minority report the withholding of my name front from the majority report must not be construed as a refusal to recognize the authority that a public utility is ei entitled I 1 titled to a fair return on the investment vesta C nt continued on page six THE NEW RATES continued from page one in the recasting of 0 the financial world some attention must be paid to the coming hour of reduced replacement values and operative expenses which doubtless will be followed by a revival in the volume of business with the two former going down and the latter bringing in larger returns the present net income sooner than looked for grow near to the full amount permitted A study of the returns received by petitioner during the past five years warrants the belief that no present distress can come to them in exercising a patience that would make possible the avoidance of resorting to the disingenuous plan of raising rates at a time already crowded with perplexing situations again in some of the schedules now in effect this power company is apparently receiving rates larger than obtain in portions of utah served by other utilities and while there is doubtless grounds therefore it naturally arouses caution and in aites hesitancy in allowing any increase this company should be treated as generously as others and insofar as the rates in any of its 1 schedules compare unfavorably orally with those in force in portions of utah served by other utilities corrections or readjustment should be granted 1 I think petitioner should be allowed to withdraw with permission 10 to lo present their case insofar as justified
