Show Killings In The U. S. Reports available so far indicate that the appalling homicide rate in the United States continued to rise during 1929, reaching 10.5 per 100,-000 100,-000 population in 141 of the largest cities. Southern cities show the largest number of homicides in proportion to population, as they have consistent con-sistent done for several years. Memphis again leading all cities of the country with 68.8 killings per 1 00.000. Birmingham follows with 51.3; Atlanta is third with 51.0 and Jacksonville is fourth with 46.9 per 100.000. Chicago, in spite of its reputation reputa-tion for violence, showed only 32.7, while New York had but 7.1 homi-:id"? homi-:id"? per 100,000. Among the causes to which observers ob-servers attribute the prevalence cl killings in America are the gun-toting habit, organized crime in connec 'ion with prohibition violaions, and laxity in punishment.
