Show Axtell People Have Close Call Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Despain and their daughter, Mrs. Lavern Larsen, of Axtell, passed through a thrilling thrill-ing and horrifying experience Saturday Sat-urday evening at about 7 o'clock , at the forks of the highway in Salt Creek canyen. They were held prisoners under a Ford roadster for fully 20 minutes before a Mr. Taylor, a dairyman from Provo, wuo was passing, discovered the plight of the party. Mr. Despain, becoming confused at the intersection of the forks of the road at this point, got ciosely to the edge of the oiled pavement, and in endeavoring to right his car, the machine shot to the opposite op-posite side and a wheel broke. The auto then tipped over and dropped 20 feet to the bottom of a pit. turning turtle and burying thi passengers underneah. All three were held tightly and were unable to extricate themselves or even move the car so as to allow escape. es-cape. At this time Mr. Taylor passed up the canyon. After going a hundred or so feet past the wrecicea car, Taylor returned and endeavored to release the party. He hurried to a work train, where help was secured and Mr. and Mrs. Despain and Mrs. Larsen were rescued res-cued from their perilous position. While pinned under the car, Mr. and Mrs. Despain were directly underneath un-derneath the tap where gasoline was leaking, and both were well saturated. When rescued Mrs. Despain Des-pain removed her gasoline-soaked clothing, and thus saved herself from burns. Mr. Despain, though, failed to do this until he reached his home, with the result that the gasoline inflicted severe burns on his shoulder, back and body, down to the hip. The women folks escaped es-caped with a few body bruises as a result of the plunge down into the 20 feet deep pit. The party was taken to Fountain Green and a message sent to Axtell. Ax-tell. Clive Despain and Lavern Larsen hurried north to return with the party. Mr. and Mrs. Despain Des-pain and Mrs. Larsen were returning return-ing from a business trip to Salt Lake, and it was after 4 a. m. Sunday morning before they reached reach-ed their homes at Axtell. Other than smashing the top of the Ford roadster, little or no damage was done to the car.--Gunnison Valley News. . . |
