"DADDY LONG LEGS" DADDY IN ANOTHER BACHELOR ROLE Warner Baxter in "Amateur Daddy" with Marian Nixon in the principal feminine role, is the screen offering at the Elite Theatre, The-atre, Thursday and Friday, May 26th and 27th. The story, which is based on Mildred Cram's popu lar novel, "Scotch Valley, is said to deftly combine drama with ro-. mance, and though the film ha3 its moments of pathos there is a delightful undercurrent of sparkling spark-ling humcr ever present. Baxter's role is that of a shy and kind hearted bachelor. When he escapes with minor Injuries an accident which results in the death of his best friend, he takes .t upon himself to care for his -al's family, whose name incident- ally happens to be Smith. But there are Smiths and Smiths, which never occurs to Baxter, and :e suun finds himself mothering and fathering a small family of poor but happy waifs. i The oldest of them is a girl of ei'-rhteen, the part played by Miss Nixon. She is inclined to resent, the intrusion of Baxter at first, but he gradually wins her confidence confi-dence which in turn develops In-1 to a very strong friendship. But j not without its pitfalls. He soon! learns that he has also won the ! enmity of the neighboring ranch! families, and that he is falling in love with the girl, much against his own will. And at the very height of his romance he discovers that it is the wrong family of Smiths he has been-caring been-caring for. The picture is said to givei Baxter a role that equals ini heart appeal his loveable characterization charac-terization in "Daddy Long. Legs," and Miss Nixon as the waif is said to give as stirring a portrayal portray-al as has come to this screen this year. In the other featured roles are Rita LaRoy, William Pawley, David Dav-id Landau, Joe Hachey, Joan Breslaw, Gail Kornfield and Frankie Darro, the last four being be-ing rated high among the leading lead-ing child players of the screen. The film was directed by John Blystone, and is that director's fifty-fifth production for Fox Filmi. |
