Winter Quarter Opens January 4 In many of the high school districts dis-tricts of the Intermountain country, coun-try, less than twenty percent of last year's high school graduates have "entered college, according to a survev being made by the president's presi-dent's office of Brigham Youn University at Provo, Utah, in anticipation an-ticipation of the opening of the Winter Quarter, January 4. President Presi-dent F. S. Karris interprets the situation as being the result of the economic depression, but expresses the hope that many of the young people will still have an opportunity oppor-tunity to enter the college of their choice befeore the winter is over. President Harris summarizes the reasons for entering college now as follows: (1) it is an economical econom-ical time to go to college. Board and room for students has been reduced in Provo from $28 and $30 a month, to $20 a month. Other Oth-er expenses have been correspondingly corres-pondingly reduced. More students than ever before are being given opportunity to help themselves. (2) Vocational and professional preparation is important now, as a prerequisite to the positions which will come with the revival of business. 3) The national committee on unemployment relief has requested that as many as possible cf the young men and women cf th.; nation enter college. (4) To live a happy life in our complex civilization demands that we become familiar with our own culture. |
