Show Utah is Rich Area for Study of Primitive Man Utah is recognized as one of the richest areas on the American Ameri-can continent for the study of primitive man according to Dr. Julian H. Steward, University of Utah anthropologist. In the region near Vernal have been discovered petroglyphs or pictures engraved on stone which rival those of the ancient Aztecs in master craftsmanship. ' One rare specimen in the Vernal region re-gion is of an ancient pueblo Indian's In-dian's god and is unique in that it is engraved in basrelief, thai is, the picture stands out and the background is chipped away. Dr. Steward sets the time of this ancient Utah culture as existing ex-isting about one thousand to fifteen fif-teen hundred years ago. He states that these people grew corn at this early date and that they, fashioned clay fetishes or images as an appeal to the gods to make the soil fertile. What is probably the earliest .domestic dog yet discovered in America was found by Dr. Steward Stew-ard in a burial cave north of Great Salt Lake. Some notable discoveries of petrogliphs have been made in the canyons and hills near Beaver, Beav-er, Fillmore, Price, Magna, Moab and Wayne county. One interesting interest-ing feature which Dr. Steward points out in regard to the petrogliphs petro-gliphs is that the ancient engravers en-gravers subjects such as sheep, deer, men, concentric circles and other figures are greatly similar to those found many hundreds of miles from Utah, a feature which seems to indicate a wide spread civilization as early as two thousand thous-and years ago. |
