Show Turkey Pool Helps Prices Some 2,000 turkey growers in Utah will receive nearly $250,000 for the sale of their Thanksgiving "gobbler" pool, aggregating about 30 carloads or Vuu.OJU pounds of birds, it was announced recently by C. C. Edmonds, upon his return to Utah from the East. Mr. Edmonds is general manager of the Northwest Turkey Growers Association, marketing agents for a gigantic pool embracing about 80 per cent of the commercial turkey production of Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Colora-do, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Washing-ton, Oregon and Nevada. The northwest pool containing 60 carloads or . 1,500,000 pounds ol choice meat, sold on the California and the metropolitan New York markets this year for about $500,-000. $500,-000. Final checks for payment are now being mailed out to the producers. pro-ducers. Utah and all other birds included in the northwest pool brought the nighest prices paid on the markets, mark-ets, principally because of the organization's or-ganization's tremendous bargaining-power, bargaining-power, its strict adherence to federal fed-eral grading standards, and its stabilizing effect upon the market. Further the birds included in this pool reached New York and California Cali-fornia in better shape than any others. Unit net prices that are being paid the growers in this and the other states mentioned are five to seven cents per pound higher than those paid members of the smaller independent pools operating in this same territory. As result the Northwest Turkey Growers' Association will settie with its members on the following net price basis: IT. S. prime young toms, 29 cents per pound; U. S. prime young hens, 28 cents; U. S. choice young toms, !7 cents: U. S. choice young hens, 26 cents; U. S. medium toms, 22 cents, and medium hens, 2l" cents. Prices received by the independent indepen-dent pools varied from 24 and 22 J cents per pound for top grade biras t as low as 14 cents per pound for those of medium quality. As both these sets of prices represent those .o be paid the producers after all overhead expenses have been deducted deduc-ted the great value of the large organization is evident. The results shown are heralded as a singular victory for organization organiza-tion and scientific marketing. "Turkey growers of the northwest association are to be congratulated lor having made such a splendid showing on the Thanksgiving market. mar-ket. The northwest agency is now a recognized power in turkey marketing, mar-keting, though this is its initial endeavor," Mr. Edmonds declared after completing the sale negotiations. negotia-tions. "The excellent results, obtained despite depressed business and economic econ-omic conditions and a sub-normal consumers' buying power, are only a good indication, however, of what might be expected in a normal year and with an organization embracing embrac-ing all turkey men in this northwest north-west area," Mr. Edmonds said. |
