Show Utah first In Silver Production, Second In Lead, Third In Copper The state of Utah has Just attained attain-ed an additional position of importance import-ance in the mining industry of the United States. This 'state now cr.me3 second in quantity of lead produced, pro-duced, being exceeded only by the state of Missouri, according to Thorn ' as Varley, superintendent of the Intermountain Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines1 located on the University of Utah campus. Utah has led all othei ' states of the Union for the past four years in the production of silver, and; ;t holds third place in the copper j mining Industry. ! An idea of the importance of Utah as a mining center is given in the figures showing the output of zinc in Utah during the past two years j In 1924 it amounted to 16,000.000 lbs. Whereas for the following year, 1925, it was over 50,000,000 lbs. The output of silver, lead and zinc in Utah has greatly increased In the ' past, due partly to experimental work carried on at the University, according to Mr. Vairley. "This has ibeen done by investigations in the University laboratories and by close cooperation between the metallurgical metallurgi-cal staff at the University and the operating op-erating companies",' he said. 'The main advances made have been in finding beter ways to separate the complex ores through improved metallurgical me-tallurgical practice". The location of the University school of Mining in the center of A- merica's mining industry offers Utah students exceptional advantages a.s does also the presence of the United States Mining Experiment Station on ! the school campus. ! i |
