In these days of unceriaiuty it is encouraging to note reports which show the planting of increased sugar beet acreage-, for this will mean increased in-creased development of the sugar industry in-dustry in the west and especially in til is valley. Also it will aid the stock industry through furnishing largo quantities of cheap food, from beet pulp and tops. During the reconstruction period when business is again gaining its stride and preparing to compete in the markets of the world, westerns must leal n to think in terms of industry. in-dustry. They must learn to demand and fight for state ami national policies under which western industries in-dustries can develop and meet competition com-petition sucessfully. In population western states are small, hence it is necessary in questions ques-tions of this kind that we combine ur efforts for policies which will assure development of our natural resources and industries. The sugar industry is an example of the benefits of manufacturing to the fanner but the sucess of the sugar industry depends upon steady labor supply and' sound national policies. The same holds true in regard re-gard to virtually all our great industries. indus-tries. We as a people in a sparcely settled settl-ed and only slightly developed section must learn to think in terms of industry and must make up our mind to swat the agitator and legislative legis-lative crank who would experiment with our very bread and butter. |
