Show Caught On to Sailors' Trick. If a man's hat blew overboard while-leaving while-leaving port many British skippers would turn back and delay sailing until un-til the next day. It was an omen that one of the crew would be lost over the side during the trip. This sign, however, how-ever, became discredited, as wily deckhands, deck-hands, desirous of another day ashore with their wives and families, contracted con-tracted the habit of going aloft nnd assisting the wind to foretell disaster. |
