Show GOOD ROADS HtOTENTION AT RICHFIELD A large delegation from Mount j Pleasant went, to Richfield Tuesday ! to attend the good roads convention j held at that city. Several automobiles automo-biles carrying twenty-five representative representa-tive citizens from this city left here ! at nine o'clock and arrived at Rich-1 Rich-1 ,eld at noon. Kerr of Manti, state road engtneer of the Sanpete and Sevier district, to all the cities of the two counties to attend a hard surface f state road convention and banquet at the southern metropolis. There were about seventy-five live citizens from Sanpete, Sevier, Wayne V an'd Garfield counties who came to ! Inspect the two and 6ne half miles of j; paved roads in this enterprising little I c"-y' D J "' S c c- - inspecting the construction work of building the road and also the mixing , of the materials used in making the road. Some of -the visitors went' to the Monroe hot springs while others visited the Utah Idaho Sugar facotry south of Richfield. In the evening a business meeting of the delegates was held in the Commercial club rooms for the purpose pur-pose of discussing a road building - program for southern Utah, and especially es-pecially for Sanpete and Sevier coun-' coun-' -.- ties. A sentiment has been growing grow-ing in favor of hard surfacing the ; state road3 from the southern end of, Sevier county to the north end of v Sanpete county. It is hoped to have , the road building machinery at work j I at the earliest possible date. I ; Following the meeting the guests ; were Invited to a sumptuous chicken ... dinner at the Masonic Hall where further discussions were entered into f relative to the road question. A f''fya mixed quartet entertained the vislt-'I vislt-'I jjt ors for half an hour with a splendid Kv. program. H, - Judge Hayes acted as chairman of ' ," the business meeting and stated that 'i the object of the gathering was to work to secure hard surfaced roads ; through the two counties within the next year. Mayor N. C. Poulson of Richfield , suggested that the first thing necess-. ary In such a movement was to map out the road contemplated for the paving and then take the matter up with the State Road Commission. - He was enthused over the paying done at Richfield and urged the state road paving program to be carried j out. The chairman of Sevier ctounty commissioners favored the paved , roads plan and considered them the V cheapest in the long run. . - 4 Mr. Hepler urged the two counties I ' to Bpeed up the work and capture the tourist traffic and divert it down a j through this way. Commissioner Parley Christiansen of Sanpete county favored the con-( con-( tinued development of our country J that our Pioneer fathers so ably be- gan. He said that building good i ' roads was an excellent way to do it. J. II. Hprnung stated that the railroad officials favor good roads ( because it means greater prosperity ,1 ! and more business for every one con- f " , cerned. !.-'. At the banquet a resolution un- h . . animously carried that it be the sense of the convention that the Sanpete San-pete and Sevier coainty commissioners commission-ers with the mayors and mayors elect of the cities and towns of these counties coun-ties and representatives of all commercial com-mercial and civic clubs meet with the State Road Commission in Salt Lake City next Tuesday and urge as great an expenditure by the State for hard surface roads in Sanpete and Sevier counties next year as it is possible to get. The convention was an educational gathering and much good was derived deriv-ed from the meeting. |
