Show GERMANY WOULD DEFER PAYMENT ENVY FROM BERLIN COING TO CONFER WITH REPARATIONS REPARA-TIONS BODY 50,000,000 Gold Marks Are Due Allies In Short Time Which is Causing the Minister of Finance Much Worry Berlin The German government has started action which may result in absolving Germany from meeting the payment of 50,000,000 gold marks required by the allies in sending Dr. Fischer, chairman of the war debt comission, and Herr Schroeder, undersecretary under-secretary of the ministry of finance, to Paris, to confer with the reparations repara-tions commission on the cruestion ot readjusting the present schedule of gold payments. Although this move Is considered a temporary expedient with the prime purpose of influencing the deliberations delibera-tions at Paris, official financial circles would welcomi? this revision as indicating indi-cating a general solution of the present pres-ent schedule of gold payments, which Chancelor Wirth has declared, Germany Ger-many is in no position to carry out, particularly since the recent collapse of German exchange. Officially it was stated Sunday that the Reichsbank was technically in a position to deliver 50,000,000 gold marks next week, but that their release re-lease from bank vaults would "badly expose" the Institution, whose officials offi-cials believe that this available gold fund shall be devoted to steadying the mark at home and abroad. The mission undertaken by Dr. Fischer and Herr Schroeder at the instigation in-stigation of the government will he carried out in the hope of sustaining the Reichsbank's position. The mission mis-sion will consider the revision of the dates for future gold payments. Any formal request for an exacS moratorium morator-ium will depend upon the nature of the pourparlers at Paris and the accommodating ac-commodating attitude of the repara-, repara-, tions commission. Banking officers believe that the progress which has marked these deliberations de-liberations in the last few weeks has contributed materially to encourag ing the German government in Its decision de-cision to approach the reparations commission at a time when marks are selling for less than five for one cent. "The question, 'Can Germany pay?' has now become fundamentally acute," Said one prominent official who believes be-lieves that the s'tuation has simmered sim-mered to a question of adopting practical, prac-tical, lucid financial policies whi'h affect af-fect the allies and Germany alike. |
