Show Goncposs Gpoascs Turlicy Congress-meddling in Turkey's recent action taking foreign affairs to a greater over 20 U.S. bases, degree than is desirable-is IT'S SENSELESS to argue directly responsible for whether the bases are vital to U.S. interests. If they were not, U.S. forces should not have occupied them in the first place. Retention of these bases is. of course, desirable. Congress, by cutting off military aid to Turkey as a sop to Greek-Americans incensed in-censed over Turkey's seizure of much of Cyprus, played for votes at home at the expense of national interests abroad. WHEN THE house in July refused to rescind the ban on arms aid, Turkey moved to take over the bases, understandably under-standably so, even if more patience had been hoped for in Washington. |
