Show Garn: Should Hot Raise Own Pay Citing that "no public official of-ficial at any level should have the right to raise his own pay," Senator Jake Garn (R-Ut.) explained his reasons for voting against the Congressional pay raise. "I FEEL we used a 'back door approach' in that we attached at-tached the raise to a Post Office Of-fice Bill and did it rather behind the scenes. ..sort of sneaking up on the American people. "If Congress wants a pay raise, they ought to be men enough to bring it up in a straight-forward bill and vote it up or down without using a back-door approach. GARN NOTED that the pay raise, which passed the Senate by a 58 to 29 vote and was strongly supported by the President, would automatically automa-tically go into effect throughout the years, increasing the same percentage percen-tage as other Civil Servants in the country get each year. "I think this will tend to insulate Congressmen and Senators from inflation and of all the people who should not be insulated from the effects of inflation is the Congress. CONGRESS IS the primary cause of inflation and I think that if each year they automatically au-tomatically get a raise, you will see even less concern than there is now for controlling con-trolling spending. The pay hike will effect the entire Congress and all other top-level government officials except the President. "ALTHOUGH I feel the pay raise is justified as far as the amount and due to the inflation infla-tion over the past six years since there has been a pav raise, I simply done with the back door ns which it was adopted I also wish to strg that public ofliciai-. level should not haw ., to raise their own pa the raise is justified Th |
