Voman Admits That She Placed Eody of Little Girl in Trunk, But Tells Conflicting Stories Regarding Regard-ing Death of Child. Ogden, Utah. A revolting murder was brought to light here Saturday afternoon when the body of Frances Ekman, aged lu, was found in a trunk In the baggage room at the un'on depot. de-pot. Mrs. Minnie Ekman of Salt Lake City, mother of the murdered child, was arrested a few hours later, and has admitted killing the child . and placing the body in the trunk which she shipped to Ogden. C. L. Anderson who is said to have been Mrs. Ekman's husband before her second marriage, is also under arrest, having been taken into custody cus-tody when he called at the baggage room in Ogden for the purpose of re-checking re-checking the trunk. Mrs. Ekman, who had recently been separated from her second husband, has admitted the killing of the child, and the placing of the body in the trunk. She declares that she chloroformed chloro-formed the child. The woman has told conflicting stories of the crime, one being that she killed the child by giving her sleeping powders and afterwards spreading a handkerchief saturated with chloroform over her face, because she feared the child would never recover her health and for the further reason that she did not care to see the child starve and that she was unable to provide for the little one. She has told another story In which she declares that the child was assaulted as-saulted by a Greek while the mother was away from the home for a few moments. On her return she found the child in a dying condition. That she placed the body in the trunk and attempted to get rid of it because she feared no one would believe her story. The girl had been dead four days when the body was found in Ogden, the discovery being made because ot the terrible stench that came from the trunk while a wisp of hair that appeared from a crack in the trunk caused the baggage men to begin an investigation. The woman insists that Anderson knew of the death of the girl, but had no part in the crime, except to attempt at-tempt to aid her in its disposal. 1 August Ekman husband of the self-confessed self-confessed murderess, who is working at Kemmerer, Wyoming, declares that he believes the woman to be insane. in-sane. Jt is thought that Anderson and Mrs. Ekman had decided to forget their former differences and again live together but that the child was In their way, and this fact sealed her doom. |
