Show ISENATOR BORAH SPRINGSSURPRISE CHARGES THAT DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE HAD ATTEMPTED TO INFLUENCE JUDGES. Charges Made by Idaho Senator Were i Brought Out by Report From Attorney Attor-ney General in Response to Senate Resolution. Washington. The flat charge that department of justice agents had investigated in-vestigated federal judges to influence their actions in cases in which the government was interested was .made in the senate Thursday by Senator Borah of Idaho, and indorsed, partially, partial-ly, at least, by Senator N'orrls. Senator Borah's charge was brought out by a report from Attorney General McReyonlds, responding to a senate resolution asking whether federal agents were investigating judges. The resolution reflected some sentiment aroused in the case of Federal Judge Speer of Georgia, whose court had been investigated and who had attacked at-tacked the department of justice in a public speech. The attorney general replied that any report, that the federal fed-eral department of justice was maintaining main-taining a system of espionage of judges "was entirely without foundation." founda-tion." Mr. Borah responded with his charge. "I know this is a very serious charge," said he, "but I am so reliably informed that I make the statement that within the last four or five years special agents have -carried on such investigations with a view to influencing influenc-ing judges." |
