Delegates began to make their appearance m Salina Friday evening when eight cars came down Salina canyon from Emery county, and by 10:30 Saturday morning there were about 175 de'egatcs on the ground. The delegates were enthusiastic en-thusiastic and determined that the Salina route shall be .made a part of the transcontinental Lincoln Highway High-way and at thac hour they repaired to the hall of the Salina high school huilding where the meeting was called call-ed to order by P. C. Scorup of the Salina Commercial Club, who announced an-nounced Pres. R. D. Young of Richfield Rich-field as temporary chairman, with S. P. Snow of Castledale as Secretary. Secre-tary. The chairman immediately launched into busin?ssby having the official call read. An address of welcome was made by Mayor Martin of Salina, who gave the delegates the freedom of the town. A response was made by C. M. Madsen of Gunnison. C. N. Lund of the Salina club gave a spirited address on the purposes for which the convention was called. Among the main things which he set forth was to develope a spirit for boosting for good roads; to demand chat if the Midland trail is to pass through Utah it should pass through as large and good a portion of the state as possible; that unlimited advertising ad-vertising should be done: and that a strong recognition should be effected. effect-ed. The great purpose he showed, was to get the highway to take in Grand, Emery, Sevier, Sanpete, Juab, Utah and Salt Lake counties, and to connect up witn Salina with the west, the south, and all directions, direc-tions, thus taking in the greater portion por-tion of the state. The name given by the committee is the "Salina Canyon Route." The officers chosen are: J. E. Helper of Richfield, president; Scott Mc-Clellan Mc-Clellan of Loa, 1st vice-president; Chas. Skougard of Richfield, 2nd vice-president; C. N. Lund of Salina, secretary; S. P. Snow of Castledale, assistant secretary. The convention resolvec" to build and maintain in the .most efficient manner possible a high way through Salina canyon to connect con-nect up all points of Central and Southern Utah. At 2 p. m. the delegates and thirty thir-ty automobiles lined up on the school grounds and were photographed and the convention resumed its wc.rk. After hearing the reports of the committees a lively discussion ensued en-sued and many enthusiastic delegates dele-gates expressed themselves upon the transcontinental Lincc In highway and good roads in general. Very excellent ex-cellent remarKs were made by J. H. Hornung of Manti, H. LeRoy Nielson Niel-son of Mount Pleasant, A. D. Dickson Dick-son of Castledale, and Sam Singleton Single-ton of Emery. Telegrams of encouragement encour-agement were received from George M. Miller, who is east, from the Utah Commercial Travelers and others, all worthy cause. They appointed the chairman of rach board of county commissioners in the district to act as chairman of an all-purpose committee com-mittee and to choose on that committee com-mittee a representative from each town in their respective counties on the route. They appointed an advertising adver-tising committee all the association officials and the Editors of Emery and Sevier county news papers. At six o'clock the delegates were invited to an elaborate banquet prepared pre-pared by the ladies of Salina. At each plate was a golden rod given by the ladies in respect to the delegates. dele-gates. A grand bail was given in the evening. eve-ning. The city of Salina treated the delegates del-egates royally. Every busines house in the town was elaborately decorated decorat-ed and a great large sign "WELCOME" "WEL-COME" was stretched across Main Street. The delegates who went from Mount Pleasant were: Mayor James W. Anderson, Councilmen A. Merz, H. LeRoy Nielson, and Lauritz Larsen; Lar-sen; also L. P. Nelson, and Dr. R. A. Burch. Mrs. James W. Anderson and Mrs. A. Merz were members of the party. S. D. Longsdorf and Joseph Jos-eph Schofield took the party to Salina Sa-lina in their automobiles. |
