Show Ilirohito's Visit Now that Emperor Hirohito shome again after his first look at America, the significance sig-nificance of that visit should t considered. NM.CL.rr years full accounts ac-counts of the Japanese surrender in August, 1945, have shown the Emperor to have been the strongest influence among Japanese aders working for peace at tat time. Only reverence for their Emperor, considered a deity, 'tsirained many Japanese ioldiers and leaders from J orceful opposition to surrender-before their homeland had been invaded. THE EMPEROR saw the light. He also has gradually lessened the unique and unrealistic awe in which he has been traditionally viewed by the Japanese people. In short, he has been an historical influence in Japan to westernize the nation and some of its ways, and in favor of friendship for America. IN THAT light the American people welcomed him, and will remember him-not as the ruler of a nation which attacked this country suddenly sud-denly in December of 1941. |
