Show Price Again First In High School Declamation Contest The state high school declamation contest held last evening at the University Uni-versity of Utah was won by Emma Johnson of Carbon County High school of Price. Price High school has succeeded in carrying away three prizes in two years, having won the public speaking contest Friday evening even-ing at t Ire university and the public sneaking contest held last year. Miss Johnson read Edward Everett Hale's "Man Without a Country," which she interpreted in a creditable manner. Hattie Bagelcy who lead selections from Irvitig's "Rip Van Winkle," received re-ceived the second prize. Others who participated were Eliza Stoddard of Richmond, Elean Coach of Ogden. Delia Holbrook of Bountiful, lone Mc Arthur of Mt. Pleasant, Edith Gibb; of Lehi, Emma Brohm of Tintic, Violet Vio-let Spears of Tooele, Ada Lee of Cedar Ce-dar City Branch Agricultural school, Don Holbrook of Fillmore. The names of the contestants were not announced until after the contest. con-test. The first prize was a gold medal med-al and the second a silver medal. The judges were Prof. Maud May Bab-coik, Bab-coik, Mrs. W. H. Leary and Oscar W. Carlson. Musical numbers were rendered ren-dered by the Salt Lake High School girls' chorus, by Miss Margaret Burton Bur-ton and by L. J! Stookey. Two preliminary debating contests were held yesterday in order that the finals of the state debating contest may be held this evening. Wasatch Academy of Mt. Pleasant was defeated defeat-ed by the Cedar City branch agricultural agricul-tural school in the morning at the Emery dormitory. Wasatch Academy-upheld Academy-upheld the negative side of the question, ques-tion, and its team was composed of Clinton Webb and Harold Hunter. Cedar City's team was composed of J. Woolley and Nan Brown. The question ques-tion debated was "Resolved, that the present tarriff laws discriminate unjustly un-justly against the West in favor of Jie East." The judges were George Hedger, C. W. Snow and Frank Pehr-son. Pehr-son. The same question was debated lgain last night by Cedar City and Brigham City High school, Cedar ity winning the decision. The Ce-lar Ce-lar City team was the same that delated de-lated Wasatch Academy in the morning. morn-ing. The final debate for the state championship will be held in the assembly as-sembly room of the 'University at 3 o'clock this evening.
