Show Artillery Recognized Anew The production of heavy artillery artil-lery and large caliber shells has been stepped up, with the obvious obvi-ous realization that the land gun has established its supreme value in ground campaigns. There was a time, when German Ger-man panzer units, dashing wildly wild-ly through enemy lines.convinced strategists that the fast-moving mechanized artillery would displace dis-place the standard field weapon. The startling success of the panzer divisions, however, it is understood, was due to surprise and superiority in their use and numbers. The , anti-tank gun, and other defense methods, have greatly reduced the effectiveness of tanks against well-prepared troops. In the Russian campaign the old-fashioned artillery barrage has produced splendid results. So it is in Africa and so it will be in Italy and estern Europe. The deadly accuracy of field guns and the sustaining shelling that they pour into enemy positions posi-tions contrast with the inability of bombing planes to hit specific targets with necessary precision or to sustain the cascade of explosives ex-plosives that overwhelms the defense. |
