Show County Agent Lists Feed Suggestions For Hog Raisers ' Pointing out that the critical shortage of protein concentrate makes it imperative that Sanpete county hog raisers give particu- j lar attention to spreading the use of protein-rich feeds to the greatest great-est possible extent, Elmer H. Gibson, Gib-son, county agent, releases a series se-ries of suggestions for increasing efficiency in swine production. Mr. Gibson emphasizes that sufficient use must be made of home-grown protein-rich feeds in order to meet the present e-mergency. e-mergency. He points out that good green pasture, particularly alfalfa, is an excellent source of protein which many hog raisers have failed to utilize to the best advantage in the past. He also suggests that the use of skimmilk and whey affords swinemen an excellent opportunity to meet protein requirements in their feeding operations. To promote efficiency in swine production, Mr. Gibson suggests that hog raisers keep in mind the following fundamental practices: prac-tices: 1. Remeber that a successful swine program requires strict sanitation to promote good health. 2. Cull out those sows which farrow small litters or have proved to be poor mothers. 3. Avoid waste of feed by keeping self-feeders or troughs in good repair. 4. Remember that alfalfa hay and pasture are not only good sources of protein and mineral, but that they are also good sour- ces of some essential vitamins in swine feeding. "Marketing liOgs at lighter weights is in line with greater efficiency for wartime pork production," pro-duction," adds Mr. Gibson. "After "Af-ter hogs reach 200 pounds in weight the amount of feed required re-quired to produce a pound of pork increases rapidly." "Utah swinemen would be wise to have a greater proportion of their pigs farrowed in the spring so that full advantage could be taken of good pasture, not only because of its nutritive value but also because it would provide a place for the pigs which would be relatively free from parasites," he concludes. |
