Stark, Extension Horticulturist. Hor-ticulturist. Tiie cover of the bulletin portrays por-trays several popular garden varieties, in near-natural colors. Dr. Stark advises in his introduction intro-duction several items which will bring more successful gardening. These are suitable soil, a weekly .. ater supply,.good seed, information informa-tion and common sense plus a little effort. He recommends plowing dn the fall or early spring, as fall plowing plow-ing improves soil tilth, allows for early spring planting, and helps control weeds and insect pests. Also, there is less demand for labor and equipment in the fall . and early spring than in late spring. Another point of advice concerns con-cerns planning of the garden in the winter. The length of the row of each vegetable planted should be adjusted to family needs and not to the number of seeds in a packet. In "Profits in Gardening," Dr. Stark states that "small gardens will produce most food value from beets, brocoli, cabbage, carrots, early onions, turnips, swiss chard, spinach, tomatoes, to-matoes, summer squash, cauliflower, cauli-flower, lettuce and snap beans." Additional advace concerns placing the .u kitchen, which 1 comfort in pre buying the be early date; pV spring frost; a: tain vegetabi the year when . ture. These r ' described and bulletin.
