Show , . - v knpete Is Winning The War on The Home Front Folster Gives Detailed Data Timber and Livestock Mean Much To People Living In Sanpete Valley; Enormous Amount of Meat Froduced Manti Forest contributes well toward the War defense effort, according to information furnished fur-nished by Supervisor A. C. Folster. During the calendar year 1943, the Manti Forest sold 2,139,356 feet B. M. of timber to 147 users. The above amount is considerably consider-ably more than was sold in 1942, wiiich amounted to 1,017,000 feet B. M. to 157 users. In addition to the above amount sold in 1943, six hundred and sixty-one users removed 573,000 feet B. M. under free use, consisting mostly of iuel wood. Nineteen sawmills operated during 1943 sawing Forest For-est Service and private land timber, tim-ber, and their finished product supplied markets throughout the State. Many farmers availed themselves of the opportunity of . curing sales for timber for improvement im-provement of ranch property at a much reduced cost per thousand thou-sand compared to timber sold to commercial operators. In 1943, 15,325 cattle and 114,-892 114,-892 sheep grazed on the forest for the summer season, which was equivalent to 66,319 cow months and 405,017 sheep months use. Calculating on the assumption assump-tion of a 75 per cent lamb crop, which is conservative, and considering con-sidering the average weights of lambs at 70 pounds at time of leaving the forest, a total of at least 5,401,830 pounds of mutton was produced, Mr. Folster said. Further calculations relative to beef produced on the basis of annual an-nual increases from 15,325 permitted per-mitted stock and allowing for leplacement of 20 percent for upkeep up-keep of herd, the calf crop of 80 percent from annual breeding stock would total 9800 calves. Calves make a gain of 2 pounds per day during the grazing sea-sonof sea-sonof 135 days on the forest or 270 pounds, making a total of 2,646,000 pounds of beef. Supplementing the above figures fig-ures from domestic stock with the average annual kill of approximately approxi-mately 4,000 deer and 125 elk, weighing 100 pounds for deer and 400 pounds for elk, increased the meat produced 412,000 pounds, making a grand total of mutton, beef and game of 8,460,330 pounds produced from the Manti Forest. Extending this by our ration allowance of 1V4 pounds per week per individual, would provide food for 5,640,022 people. The above figures do not include in-clude the spread in weights of the matured stock nor the replacements re-placements allowed for the upkeep up-keep of herds. It does include, however, the natural increase and their gains made while on Forest lands. |
