Show Veterans News More than a half-million veterans vet-erans who owe the Government money as the result of overpayments overpay-ments on subsistence allowances allow-ances or other veteran benefits or defaults on loans guaranteed by the Veterans Administration may find all or part of their share of the forthcoming special dividend payment on National Service Life Insurance deducted to cover their debts, VA said. VA estimated that somewhere between 20 and 30 million dollars dol-lars of such debts may be collected col-lected from the NSLI dividends. All of the individuals concerned con-cerned are aware of their indebtedness in-debtedness to the Government and know that It is deductible from other payments to which they may be entitled, the agency agen-cy said. Some 6 million veterans are currently indebted to VA for . a total of a.bout 70 million dollars The bulk of this amount constitutes consti-tutes overpayments on subsistence subsist-ence allowances for veteran; taking educational courses or training under the GI Bill. Other types of indebtedness are overpayments on pension, compensation or readjustment allowances, and losses made good to lenders on defaulted GI loans. A considerable number 'of veterans vet-erans are now repaying indebted ness by having deductions from their monthly checks. When the overpayment is wiped out, as it may be by the dividend deductions, de-ductions, there will be no furth-or furth-or monthly withholding. Certain disabled vetarans may now be eligible for financial aid in acquiring "wheelchair" homes under a liberalized law enacted-by enacted-by the last session of Congress, VA said. As amended by Public Law 286, approved Sept. 7, 1919, the law now provides assistance in acquiring a suitable housing unit 'with special fixtures or movable facilities made -necessary by the nature of the disability, dis-ability, for veterans whose service serv-ice connected disability regardless regard-less of the type of disability-prevents disability-prevents them from getting 'about without the aid of braces, crutches, canes -or a wheelchau.
