Show 500-Mile Thruway The State of New York is now constructing a 486-mile thruway to carry pleasure and commercial traffic from New York City to Lake Erie without a single traffic traf-fic light or grade intersection. The new highway will have six lanes, with opposing traffic separated by a landscaped mall and the road will be constructed to give drivers a clear visibility of 1,000 feet ahead at all times. It will be completed within five years and will be operated without with-out toll charges to travelers. One of the improvements in the highway will be provision for vehicles to enter and leave by accelerating and decelerating lanes, connected with exterioi thoroughfares on an average of every four miles. Moreover, the separate lanes will handle commercial com-mercial and pleasure traffic, with a continuous wide shouldei to allow the withdrawal of disabled dis-abled cars from the high-speec traffic flow. The American Public Work: Association says that the $202, 000,000 express super-highwaj i will connect on the west with s 'similar highway being planned by the State of New Jersey and I that eventually, it will be the I "main stem" of an express-way net-work into New England and j Canada. |
