Thinned 35.5 Acres of Sugar Beets; Wins Grand Prize of $75.00 Winner of the grand prize o' $75 for the most sugar beets thinned in the Gunnison Factory District of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company during spring thinning operations is Reed Balle of Glen wood, Utah, is was announced today. . Mr, Balle, a junior high school principal, thinned 35.5 acres of sugar beets. Conducted by the Sanpete-Sevier Beet Association the Extension Service and the Utah-Idaho Sugar Company the contest was open to local labor in Sanpete and Sevier counties Two other Glenwood thinners Leland Paul and Richard Hoyle' Stook second place in the contest Operating as a team, the two thinned a total of 65 acres or 32.65 acres each. In previous years he has directed a crew of boys in spring beet thinning in the South Sevier Utah district. It is estimated that 43.77 per cent of the sugar beets in the entire Gunnison Factory were thinned by local labor, including t high school students who partici-pated partici-pated in the beet-thinning con-! con-! test. Other sources of thinning labor included prisoners of war, ' 22.15 per cent; Mexican nationals, nation-als, 3.56 per cent and Indians, 30.53 per cent. The excellent response of local , laborers to the appeal to thin sugar beets when a labor short-; short-; .age existed shows what can be done when the work is carried j on with the right determination, Mr. Sanders said. j I : Marriages Announced Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Anderson , announce the marriage of their I daughter, Jane to Lt. Charles , Richard Thompsen. He is the ( son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. ihompsen of Spring City. The wedding was held in the Presbyterian church at 2 P. M. s Friday, August 16th and the service was perfomed by the ; Rev. Erwin E. Ballinger. A short reception was held afterwards in I the church. The bride wore a blue dress white accessories and ear ned pink rpses. She was attend - ei by Miss Janice K. Anderson as maid of honor. Warren H. f thompsen, brother of the groom, was best man. Miss Anderson is a graduate t Occidental College in Los Angeles, and last year was Peech Director of the Junior n'gh School in Twin Falls, Idaho where she also had a radio program. pro-gram.
