Show In The Mail Oct. 28, 1948 The Pyramid Mt. Pleasant, Utah Gentlemen: Please print the following. George Washington who was the first president of the United States, and who was accredited with the distinctive honor of being called the father of his country, served two terms as president of the U. S. A third term apparently was offered him but he declined the honor and gracefully accorded the high position to his successor. That royal, loyal precedent of declining "a third term was followed fol-lowed by his successors for wel nigh a century and a half, then followed an unfortunate exception, and the sacred cus- j torn was broken. A third term was sought and attained, and even a fourth. A sad. unwise and costly mistake, indeed. From the time that Utah be came a state up until now, every ev-ery governor w ho has been hon- lored by the citizens with the high and honorable position of governor of Utah, not one up to the present time has sought to break this time honored and patriotic custom of limiting the office to two terms. Now comes Governor Maw and brazenly contends for the breach of this time honored custom cus-tom of two terms only. How-brazen, How-brazen, how ignoble, how foolish, how simple. It is devoutly to be wished that the good citizens citi-zens of the state will not make the mistake of electing him to a third term. There are scores and scores of men in Utah as able, as worthy, as patriot! ' and even more deserving than Governor Maw. " Are we democratic? Then give some one else a chance. Let us all, like grim death, stand by the tradition of two terms onlv, henceforth and forever. C. W. Sorenson, Mt. Pleasant, Utah. |
