Show Weed Control Experts Plan For Long Fight The. 1940 Utah weed program is just an initial step in a long process pro-cess of control measures which will take about 25 years to complete, com-plete, is the opinion of Professor J. C. Hogenson, Extension Agronomist Agron-omist at the Utah State Agricultural Agricul-tural college. The objectives set by the state weed control comittee for this year's program include steps to prevent planting of infested seed and controlling distribution of weed seeds. This latter will be promoted by keeping the seeds irom irrigation water, feed grains hay and straw and controlling movement of livestock, Professor Hogensen reports. Measures will be taken to prevent pre-vent spread of weeds to new land and as far as possible to rid already al-ready infested lands of these obnoxious pests. These two movements will necessitate correlation cor-relation of all private, corporate, municipal, county, state and federal fed-eral agencies in order to obtain the results being sought. Director William Peterson of the Extension Service and chairman chair-man of the State Weed Control committee estimates that although al-though much more active interest inter-est is being shown this year than ever before, there is a long period of work ahead of the committee with an estimated expense of some twelve millions of dollars. The organization for this project pro-ject is headed by a committee comprised of Director Peterson, David F. Smith, commissioner of agriculture for Utah; Dr. R. J. Evans, agronomist at Utah State Agricultural college; Ward Hol-brook, Hol-brook, state Farm Bureau president, presi-dent, and Dr. R. H. Walker, director di-rector of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Each county will also have its own organization comprised of county emmissioner, county agricultural ag-ricultural agent, district agricultural agricul-tural inspector, county Farm Bureau Bu-reau president, member of the county crop imprvement committee com-mittee and a representative of the WPA. . At a state weed control meeting meet-ing held recently in Salt Lake City, representative of 26 counties coun-ties of the state adopted twelve resolutions which will be the basis of the coming year's control ; program. |
