Show SPRING CITY I By Special Correspondence j Spring City celebrated Utah Pioneer Day on Saturday, July 24th. Our local Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers had the program in charge. President Ruth Osborne gave the address of Welcome to the congregation who met in the Ward chapel at 10:30 a. m. The congregation sang, "Utah, Star of The West." The opening prayer was offered by Elder Jos. G. Schofield. The Girls Chorus sang, "My America." A talk was given by Annina Mickle. A piano solo, by Miss Mary G. Larsen. A reading by Ula Lee Blain. A Pioneer chorus. Mrs. Helen V. Madsen with an Acordian and Mrs. Marinda Billingston with Guitar accompanied Mrs. Thelma Madsen, who sang, "Home On The Range," and "Annie Laura." Laudeen Madsen sang in tribute to her great grandmother, "Queen of All The West," the Queen of '47, Stena Allred, 88 years old pioneer, whose attendants were C. H. Acord, 83, and Robert Brough, who that day was 84 years old. Utah of 1943 was Miss Theene Osborne, who gave a talk. Flowers were presented to the Queens. A vocal duet, "On a Wing and a Prayer," was given by Larue Dahl and Maxine Strate. A reading to the Pioneers was given by Mary Finnell. Frank Van Cott of Cedar City played the piano rendering "Come, Come Ye Saints," and "God Bless A-merica," A-merica," and the congregation joined in singing the songs. A tribute to The Pioneers was given by Hazel Black and Flowers Flow-ers were then presented to 13 pioneers, 80 years of age and more, who were present. The benediction was offered by Reed H. Allred. Olive Coleman represented Brigham Young and Mary B. Pederson, Aurilie Madsen and Manett Allred represented the 3 first women in the original pioneer pio-neer company in 1847. In the afternoon there were games, sports and swimming; also a children's dance and in the evening a picture show in the Victory Theatre completed the day's activities. Mrs. George Whitly of Salt Lake City spent the past week visiting with relatives at Spring City. Mrs. Grant Nielsen went to Salt Lake City last week to visit with relatives and friends. Mrs. Mary Brough spent the later part of the past week in celebrating the Pioneer in Salt Lake City with relatives. Mrs. Easton Kelsey visited in Moroni with her daughter last Thursday. Earl Jensen, who left here on March 1st to shear sheep in California, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana, returned home last week. Mrs. Gilbert Nyberg was taken to Salt Lake City last week to |
