Show Thing? One Remembers By R. M. Hofer The names of certain cities are household words around the world-New world-New York, London, San Francisco, Paris, Shanghai. To millions of pecple they are synonymous with the names of the countries In which they are located. No world port, howver, has ever seen so radical a geographical change in its harbor as San Francisco. Fran-cisco. From the Mark Hoplrns hotel ho-tel that favorite observation point in the City of Seven Hills, one now locks down over San Francisco Bay and sees the two - greatest traffic bridges In the world across a harbor har-bor in which the battleship fleets cf several nations could anchor without d sturbing commercial traffic traf-fic If the Empire State building had been erected in the middle of New York harbor the change would net have been as startling. If a subterranean upheaval had raised an island in the middle of San Francisco Bay It would not ha- e caused as marked a change in the landscape as have the ac-t ac-t vities of man in three shore yeair. The San Francisco bridges add new I'innacles to a harbor whose city is noted for the seven hills cn vhich it is built. New world, land n.nrks have been created. |
