Commissioner of Law Enforcement in the Gem State, reports 333 highway accidents acci-dents that have occured in that state during the first seven months of this year, two thirds of them we e caused by "Drunken and Reckless" driving1. The report srs ws a total of 76 persons killed, 277 injured, and property damage of $51,307.25. In summarizing the reports, 13 deaths were due to recklessness and 10 cases to drunken drunk-en driving. The g eater number of accidents happened in the day time with clear weather and on dry roads. In the first three months of the year 45 accidents occured when the reads were covered with ice and snow. 192 accidents occured under clear skies and 29 in cloudy weather. wea-ther. The roads were dry for 181 accidents, while 34 were in crashes upon wet roads. Of the time of the accidents, 144 occured during the daylight an 111 in darkness. The ages cf the persons killed were: six from 1V to 10 years; eight from 10 to 17 years; twelve from 18 to 21 years; twenty-four from 22 to 45 years; twenty-two from 45 years and over. Listed as the causes of the accidents: acci-dents: 37 drivers did net have the right cf way, 33 drove their cars off the roadway, 36 were on the wrcng side of the road 26 were speeding1, 25 were on the wrong side of the road on curves and hills, 12 were blinded by oncoming cars, and 16 hit parked cars. Eight drivers went to sleep at the wheel and five had defective steering gears. Seven sideswiped cars and nineteen cars skidded into accidents. acci-dents. Three autos were struck by trains, while six crashed into bridge abutments, fences and rock walls. Nine drivers whoi made improper im-proper turns and eight not watching watch-ing their driving, put cars in wrecks. The other accidents making mak-ing up the fatality list were crashes crash-es in snow storms, intersection collision and many various nature. |
