Show SOME TIMELYJDIT0R1ALS Let's Learn to See Vision of the Present MIGHT AS WELL OPPOSE THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT To be opposed to Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear is much like being opposed to The Sermon on the Mount. There were lawyers in Jerusalem, sticklers for the letter and ignorant of the spirit, who said to themselves after they had heard of the immortal Sermon: "We've got this strange pretender now. His doctrine is heresy, impracticable, im-practicable, unworkable, even dangerous." Before His inspired in-spired word they were as dead men's bones and blinded to the vision that blazed from those immortal words, They could look backward to Moses and the prophets and garnish their sepulchres because they were long dead, but they could see absolutely nothing in the living Christ. Is history repeating itself? The one vision that has flamed out of the war rises from the Atlantic Charter and the Four Freedoms, to which some lawyers are as blind and deaf as were the lawyers in Jerusalem. "It can't be applied. It won't work. It's political trickery." O ye of little faith! Know you not that where there is no vision the people perish? God pity your stubborn blindness? With more than half of the world's population perishing in the dark gulfs of Fear and Want people are admonished to smother the one bright hope that looms on the horizon and fall back into the swamps of the battle of greed for gain for the few and want and fear for the many! Here is what a noted writer says about the Atlantic Charter in the magazine Destiny: "A New Order is embodied em-bodied in the Atlantic Charter, a document much more remarkable re-markable than has yet been recognized. A manifesto that registers a marked advance upon anything before reached in history. It is a noble vision. It is the goal of ancient prophets become the goal of satesmen with their visions translated into national policies. The whole development bears every mark of the overruling direction of God." |
