Show Funeral Service Thursday for Rose B. Hayes Mrs. Rose Brown Hayes, 96, former for-mer resident of Pleasant Grove, died Feb. 11 1957 in a Salt Lake Hospital of causes incident to age. She was bom in Lehi on Dec. 21, 1860, the daughter of pioneer John Brown . and Margaret Zimmerman Brown. Her father was the Captain Cap-tain of the 13th Ten in the first Utah Pioneer Company led by President Brigham Young. John Brown and Orson Pratt of that first Company on the 19th of July, 1847, were the first of these pioneers to see Salt Lake Valley. Mrs. Hayes was married to Isaac Is-aac John Hayes, a prominent Utah educator, on Oct. 29, 1884, in the Logan Temple. Seven years later, at age 31, she was left a widow. Mrs. Hayes was a member of the class of 1880, .the first class to be graduated from the Brigham Young Academy where she was listed) as an honor student. Among her classmates were Justioe George Sutherland and Senator William H. King. In June, 1950, she was presented pre-sented the "Distinguished Alumnus Alum-nus Award" by Brigham Young Univa-rsity, "as an expression of esteem for meritorious achievements achieve-ments which have brought honor and distinction to alma mater and inspiritation to alumni." She taught school in Pleasant Grove for a number of years and in that community she has been a prominent civic and church leader. lead-er. She was City Treasurer for three terms of two years each; she served as census taker; she was school trustee and clerk of the school board for four years, and she served as tithing clerk for twenty years for all three of the Pleasant Grove Wards. Mrs. Hayes was largely responsible respon-sible for the erection of the Pioneer Cabin in Pleasant Grove, which is noted for its many rare historic relics. Having a natural literary bent, Mrs. Hayes wrote the 'histories 'his-tories of 60 Pleasant Grove pioneer families. Mrs. Hayes was the mother of three sons, Prof. Junius J. Hayes of the University of Utah; Claude E. Hayes, auditor for the Church Board of Education, both deceased; deceas-ed; and Isaac R. Hayes, Salt Lake City. A stepdaughter, Mrs. Ross (Rose) Bartlett, Salt Lake City, also survives. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 39 greatgrandchildren, great-grandchildren, a brother, Dr. John Z. Brown, Sr. of Salt Lake City and three sisters, Amy Brown Lyman, Ly-man, Salt Lake City; Mary Brown Clark, Provo, and Nettie Brown Thome, Manti. Funeral services will be held Thui-sday, Feb. 14, in the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove First-Fifth Ward Chapel Chap-el at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the Chapel from 12 to 1 p.m., prior to services. Burial will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. |
