Show 'Lute Song' Slated for Thespian Production at Pleasant Grove High School on February 20 Wednesday, February 20, is the date set for the Thespian play, "Lute Song," which will be presented pre-sented at 8:15 p.m. in the high school aucUtorium. "Lute Song," a three-act play with twelve scenes, has interested people for years. Many high school speech teachers have presented it enthusiastically because it is a challenge and because of its beauty, beau-ty, colorfulness of costumes, and fast-moving and changing scenes. They have said they have never directed plays which have moved audiences as strongly as "Lute Song." With Yul Bryner and Mary Martin, "Lute Song" was a big success on Broadway. The story concerns a young scholar, Tsai-Yong, in China, who is advised by his father to go to the Emperor's Court f or honors. He does not want to leave his parents and his young wife. Tchao-on-Ni-ang, whom he loves; but he obeys his father's command. The young scholar rises to the heights and is made Chief Magistrate. Magis-trate. He is then commanded to marry a beautiful princess. He begs and prays, but he is told only to forget his past completely. His father and mother, while waiting for their son's return, die of starvation. His wife, who has faithfully tried to care for them to the extent of begging, sells her hair to give them an honorable burial. The young princess finally leams the secret of Tsai-Yong's unhap-piness unhap-piness and demands of her father permission to find Tchao-on-Ni-ang. At one time Tsai-Yong passes pass-es close enough to touch Tchao-on-Niang, but he does not even recognize recog-nize her. Under the direction of Mary Jean Waddell, Thespian sponsor, and Carol Pulley and Judy Robinson, Robin-son, student directors, the cast includes in-cludes the following Thespians: Scholar, Robert Wilcox; his wife, Muriel Monson; Prince, Owen Wright; Princess, Judy Jolley; Father and Mother, Jimmie Swen-sen Swen-sen and Deanna Pendergraft; an old friend of the 'family, Margur-ette Margur-ette Young; Attendants, Maralyn Thorne and Howard Rees. Other members of the cast are Jaroy Simmons, Pat Jolley, Bonnie Robertson, Sheila Draper, Karen and Ardith Walker, Sheila Mitchell, Mit-chell, LaVeme Hall, Barbara West, Karolyn Swenson, and Connie Johnson. |
